Common sense about metal choices

I'd like to take a moment and explain the properties and the qualities of both gold and platinum, and do a fair job of comparison of which is the best in certain applications. I will use the 18Kt white gold as the gold example, since this combination tends to produce the strong white look as well as the strength... So, here goes...

Platinum is a true white metal, in that the pure form is a purely white in color, there is no metal that is more resistant to wear than platinum, being about 1.7 times as dense as 24Kt gold. This makes platinum a great choice for projects where strength is critical, a delicate and light ring is definately best in platinum...

Where platinum makes all the sense to select is where the ring's structure is enhanced by the properties of platinum, but in say a band ring the appeal might be the more "weighty and heavy feel" of the metal, which is a factor... A substantial platinum band might be $1200 where an equivelent band in say 18Kt white gold might only cost $400, so as you can see there is a place where a nice heavy ring in gold gives the weight and feel, and can be very much less expensive, and basically give you everything you want...

For example, on my celtic custom for example, a size 10 gent's ring to add rails is like this...

Platinum rails = Approximately $750

18Kt white gold rails = $250

So, in summary I think I would say that "While platinum is the perfect choice for that very delicate ladies ring or setting for that fine diamond, white gold offers much, with very similar properties, for much less. White gold is perfect for framing rails for celtics, nice weighty bands and jewelry which if built in platinum would be very expensive and quite heavy as well... I think that platinum is the perfect choice for the fantasy hand engraved custom job, for the resolution and the engraving will be more dramatic, long lasting and as a canvas for engraving, there is nothing better than platinum...

Where gold makes sense is in that application where the mass and structure are such that the added inherent strength is not a critical factor... (thicker rings). I am a great fan of using platinum baskets and crown in gold rings, for as a true white metal this is the best way to keep the fine white diamond white, and enhance it's appearance further, as well as add security of a stronger metal.
