Most of us are attracted to gemstones and are familiar with a few of the most popular and well known varieties, but there are many minerals possessing qualities that make them desirable as gemstones. Some of the lesser known stones are strikingly beautiful, relatively rare, and yet sufficiently inexpensive to make them readily accessible to a gem collector or jewelry aficionado. The list below is extensive but certainly not exhaustive; it includes familiar stones often used in jewelry and also stones suitable only for collections (due primarily to fragility). Many gemstones of natural origin are listed here, and I've just begun to list some synthetic and manmade materials with no natural counterparts. I'll try to add many more lesser known gemstones from time to time; let me know if any of your favorite stones are missing from the list.
